Osun INEC REC advocates tough sanctions for quack lawyers

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, has called on the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to intensify efforts in monitoring and combating the issue of quack lawyers.

Addressing participants as a guest speaker at the Chrisland University College of Law dinner in Abeokuta, Agboke emphasized the importance of the NBA taking decisive action against fake lawyers to safeguard the integrity of the legal profession.

He likened fake lawyers to quack surgeons, stating that they pose a significant threat by potentially sending people to jail and tarnishing the noble image of the legal profession.

Agboke highlighted the need for vigilance, stating, “The NBA must step up its monitoring activities like never before. It must spare no effort to bring them to book.”

Discussing the theme, “Pathway to a Successful Legal Career,” Agboke advised aspiring lawyers to prioritize diligence and studiousness.

He emphasized that success in the legal profession requires a commitment to studying and avoiding distractions. Agboke also pointed out that issues of fake lawyers are often linked to individuals who did not complete their law programs or could not pass the Law School exams.

The Vice Chancellor of Chrisland University, Prof Chinedum Babalola, expressed the university’s commitment to producing top-notch legal professionals.

Despite being the most recently accredited college in the institution, the Law College has shown promise, according to Babalola.

He encouraged law students to brace themselves for a challenging yet rewarding academic journey that would mold them into outstanding legal luminaries.
